Elements to Celebrate Music Heritage

Home to the Don Gibson Theatre and the world-famous Earl Scruggs Center, visitors from as far away
as Japan travel to the quaint City of Shelby, North Carolina to experience the life and history of the
prominent Shelby son that gave the banjo instrument an international voice.

A strong commitment from the city, citizens and business leaders prompted the desire to implement
a city-wide wayfinding system to guide the influx of visitors into Shelby. Though the city did not
have a “brand,” to incorporate into the sign design, the city still wished to move forward with the
anticipated revitalization project.

ACSM met with the committee to design impactful signs that would still reflect the city’s past,
present and future without including a specific brand image. Four unique and artistically interpretive
finial designs that exemplify the best of Shelby were custom designed and fabricated along with
distinctive design variations in the trailblazing and wayfinding signage.

The entire process (from design to fabrication) which began in March 2014, put the project on a
fast track schedule that easily cleared NCDOT/ MUTCD compliance regulations. ACSM designed,
fabricated and installed Phase I, which consisted of 53 signs, in 13 months.
